Charles Léon Méry (France, 1860–1924) Barques amarrées au bord de l'eau, circa 1890–1910

Original oil on canvas. Signed "Ch. Léon Méry" in the lower right corner.

This exceptional turn-of-the-century French oil painting captures a serene, atmospheric morning along a quiet regional waterway. Rendered with fine, impressionistic brushwork and a delicate tonal palette, this luminous landscape perfectly preserves the tranquil, poetic mood of the historic French countryside.
Charles Léon Méry was a celebrated 19th and early 20th-century French landscape artist. Born into an artistic family, he studied painting directly under his father, the accomplished animalier artist Alfred Émile Méry, and made his official debut at the prestigious Paris Salon in 1878. Méry became highly regarded for his mastery of light and water, specializing in pastoral views, coastal shorelines, and intimate scenes documenting houseboats and skiffs along the Seine. Working during the height of the post-impressionist movement, his landscapes are heavily collected today for their soft tonal qualities, atmospheric depth, and timeless representation of late-19th-century French plein-air traditions
